Panther Grouper
Scientific Name : Cromileptes altivelis
Status : Vulnerable (IUCN)
On view at Aquarium in : OFF DISPLAY
The panther grouper, with its striking polka-dotted appearance, is a fascinating fish native to the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region. Its elongated body and humpbacked shape, combined with its distinctive black spots, make it a popular species in the aquarium trade. Unfortunately, overfishing has placed the panther grouper at risk in the wild.

Quick Facts
Did You Know?
- Vulnerability to Overfishing: Panther groupers are highly sought after in the aquarium trade and as food, making them vulnerable to overfishing. This has contributed to their Vulnerable status on the IUCN Red List.
- Ambush Predators: As ambush predators, panther groupers use their spotted pattern to blend into their coral and rocky surroundings. They wait patiently for unsuspecting prey before launching a swift attack.
- Unique Breathing Technique: Unlike many fish, panther groupers can ‘gulp’ water over their gills, allowing them to remain stationary for long periods. This ability helps them stay hidden from both prey and predators.
- Protogynous Hermaphrodites: Panther groupers, like many species of reef fish, are protogynous hermaphrodites. This means they are born female and, as they mature, some individuals transition to males. The transition usually begins around 3 years of age, with the majority of dominant individuals becoming male by 8 years. This reproductive strategy helps maintain balanced populations, as larger, more dominant males often control breeding in their territory.
