Over generations, these fish have lost both their pigmentation and eyesight, relying instead on heightened senses of touch and vibration to navigate their shadowy world. Despite their lack of vision, they thrive in these isolated environments, demonstrating the power of adaptation.

- Eyes Evolved, Then Lost: Despite being blind, the Mexican cavefish still carries the genetic code for developing eyes. However, in the lightless caves where they live, these genes are not expressed, and their eyes either shrink or don’t develop at all.
- Survival Through Senses: Without vision, cavefish rely on heightened senses to survive. They use tiny hairs along their bodies to detect water currents, vibrations, and the presence of nearby objects or prey, helping them navigate and locate food.
- Unique Communication: These fish have been observed developing distinct “click” sounds, created by their jaws, which they use to communicate and navigate. Interestingly, cavefish from different cave systems have developed unique dialects of clicks.
- Convergent Evolution: The blind Mexican cavefish is an example of convergent evolution—several cave-dwelling fish species around the world have similarly lost their eyesight due to living in perpetual darkness, showing how environmental pressures shape species in comparable ways.
- From Surface to Cave: The cave-dwelling form of Astyanax mexicanus evolved from sighted, surface-dwelling ancestors. Some populations of this species still exist above ground, living in rivers and streams, where they retain their eyesight and pigmentation.

Located right on the main road so very easy to locate and head over to food and shopping. There are adorable penguins and otters to watch and interact with through the glass. Also, there are many interesting fish, lobsters, crabs, rays, etc to admire. We didn’t have kids with us but definitely something they would enjoy. I would recommend it everyone who stops in Dingle.
Definitely a must see spot in Dingle. We loved the butterfly room and the otters. All of the exhibits are well maintained, the animals look healthy and cared for and the educational talks were very informative.
Great aquarium with lots of different tanks, exhibits and information. Plenty of fish, sea creatures, penguins, otters and even a butterfly enclosure make this a lovely place to spend two hours. Staff are informative and helpful.
Great place! Seems tiny on the outside but lots to see, lovely time spent for both adults and kids. There is a variety of animals to see and interesting facts and info to read as well, highly recommended!
