The axolotl is a fascinating amphibian native to the ancient lake complex of Xochimilco in Mexico City. Known for its extraordinary regenerative abilities, the axolotl can regrow limbs, spinal cord, and even parts of its heart and brain. Unlike most amphibians, axolotls exhibit neoteny, meaning they retain their larval characteristics, such as external gills, and live a fully aquatic life throughout adulthood.
